Selectividad Exam 2001: Lunar Embassy

Title: Some people say that there is intelligent life on other planets. Discuss.

Even though science has evolved so fast, we haven't solved this enigma: Does intelligent life exists on other planets? On account of our doubt, we can't talk about facts, but about possibilities.

On the one hand, Humanity feels the necessity of knowing whether we are alone or not. The fear of solitude seems to be instinctive. That's why we attribute rare aerial happenings to UFO's visits or contact attempts. In fact, this is the origin of lots of alien films like "Contact" or "E.T.". On the other hand, I think that if extraterrestrial life existed it wouldn't be surely intelligent. In my opinion, Homo Sapiens' evolution is the result of a great chance which have been possible thanks to the solar light, the existence of liquid water on the Earth's surface and many other factors.

To conclude, as far as I'm concerned, the possibility of extraterrestrial life is huge due to the whole extensuion of the Universe. It's a stadistical issue. But I won't deny that I would be glad if one day, SETI organisation (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) received a reply to their messages.

Selectivity exam June 2003: Elivis lives!

Option B:What do you think of the fan's attitude towards famous people? Discuss.

Nowadays fame is overestated and fans can reach to exceed the limits.
There are some cases of people who love a celebrity to the point of harassment like fans who rummage in the trash of his favourite actor.
Other ones have gone to a concert or a show and when their idol appear they have swooned right there.
This kind of people are so obsessed in seeing or touching or even hearing their idols that can sometimes reach to madness for this purpose.
And what about auctions? Peolpe are ready to pay huge quantities of money for an idol's tuft of hair of an actess or a musician,or a swety t-shirt of a footballer...

In my opinion there shouldn't be gods on the earth and peolpe should be less obsessed in celebrities, we sometimes forget thar they are humans to.

Selectividad Exam June 2001: Abuse of antibiotics

Title: Should antibiotics be available without a doctor's prescription? Discuss and support your arguments.

In my opinion, antibiotics should never be given without a prescription. Like all kinds of medicines, thay have a concrete aim, so we must only use them when really necessary. But I don't think is people's fault as much as it seems.

One of the problems is that pharmacists give them to anyone. A desperate mother would do anything to cure her little kid from a bad cold. If the pharmacist gives her antibiotics she will think that's what her child has to take. But if, on the other hand, the pharmacist says 'your boy should take this instead' the mother will give him that. There is also the situation that someone is sick and finds at home some antibiotics, so he or she decides to take them, thinking that it's what they are supposed to do.

But if we make people more conscious about the danger of doing that they will stop, at least for their own good. Antibiotics are something serious we should not play with.

Selectividad Exam September 2003: Dragons

Title: Why are dinosaurs so interesting today? Explain.

There is not doubt that since humans have met the existence of dinosaurs, they have been a fascinating mistery, which has caused countless theories and stories trying solve it.

First of all, I think that one of the causes of this interest is because they are different to current animals, especially in size, most dinosaurs were hundreds of times bigger.
Since a more scientific point of view, they could be interesting because their study can help to know more about the Earth in the past and about animal evolution.

Finally, I believe that the most interesting point is their extinction. Why?, maybe because a similar event could happen again.

Selectividad Exam: A relative difference

Title: Have you ever had a pet? Describe the experience.

Well, first of all I must say that I don't like having pets very much. And my mother doesn't like them neither, I guess. So I just remember to have had some fishes and a turtle, specially the turtle.

When I was four or five years old, my cousin had a turtle but she didn't want to have it anymore, so she gave it to me. I was so happy because it was my first pet. I called it 'Susi' and I liked a lot to take care of it and feed it.

Then we went to spend a weekend in my village and I took Susi with us. There we have a very big garden and Susi disappeared in it. I couldn't find it and I had to come back home without it, so I was very sad. After that I have never had a pet again, only a couple of fishes. Maybe the first experience wasn't so good and because of that I don't like pets anymore.

Option B:Have you ever had a pet?Describe the experience.

I had a pet a long time ago.I was four or five years old when my father bought me a dog.
My brother called it "Perry" because it´s an easy name .Perry was a shar pei,a breed of Chinese origin. It had very wrinkled skin ,especially in its head and neck and orange colour .It had a normal size with small eyes and a snout as an hippopotamus. But what I like more was its dark blue tongue.
The dog was a calm and very affectionate dog.It liked to eat very much ,especially meat and pasta.Always, when we were eatins it gets under the table to see if we gave it food. It´s wasn´t a very noprmal dog.It didn´t like playing with other dogs ,chasing the bol not even start running behind the postman.
It died when I was eleven years old for an infection and I miss it very much. That´s the reason why I don´t want to have another dog.

POINTING THE FINGER

Living with a serius illness: how could life be everyday?

Everyday I wake up and I see them. This doesn´t surprise me, I have just seen them in my dreams.

I have a shower and I go to the kitchen. While I have breakfast they talk to me but I don´t hear them. In fact, I don´t want to do it so I concentrate on my toast and take my medicine, I can´t forget it.I take the keys to go to work. The doctor said if I take my medicine, I could work so that´s what I do. My work-mates are very kind with me.This is okay allthough my first day was a little uncomfortable but now I´m getting used to being poor Mike, the one who everybody has to be carefull with.

I arrive home, have dinner, and go to bed
_Goodnight Jane, goodnight Billy.

The end of the day the medicine is not that effective. It is hard to be an esquizofrenic.

ABUSE OF ANTIBIOTICS by Pablo Lopez Diez

Antibiotics are a good way to fight against virus. In fact, they are a very powerful weapon, even dangerous if used without caution. In our modern society everyone has a duty to do: the teacher teaches, the mechanic fixes cars… So why should a person who's not a doctor recommend certain drugs to another people? It is a simple answer: they shouldn't.
If a person has not studied to be a doctor, that person should not do a doctor's duty. Bad uses of drugs may not have the result we wanted. Or even worse, they can make us immune to the drug, and they also create an addiction. In conclusion, medicine doctors (MDs) are the right people to care about our health and prescribe us drugs. So don't let anyone else have their own decisions before getting to a doctor.

A RELATIVE DIFFERENCE by Pablo Lopez Diez
A)
I bought it on December 29th, 2005, on a local pet shop. I wanted a hamster and as soon as I saw it, I knew I'd buy it. I named it Otis, after Otis Redding, which was the singer I was listening to while trying to find an original name.
Having a pet was awesome at first, but the fact that I had to take so much care of such a small thing, made me think of it as a load.
When it died, about a year and a half after I bought it, his death was really difficult to bear. I think Otis died because of a cancer.
It was buried with honor, near a highway so its spirit had something to do: watching me drive.

Selectivity exam 2004-2005: Amphibian decline serves as global warming

Option: a) Do you think our planet is experiencing a climatic change?

I think there is no doubt that the world is suffering from a temperature rising. Anywhere we research, we will see that it is a big problem we should try to solve.

First of all, average temperature nowadays is much higher than it was a few centuries ago, or even a few decades ago. And if we go on like this, it will soon rise to such high levels that it will be really difficult for us to stand. And a lot of animal and plant species will die as a consequence.

In addition, there is a hole in the ozone layer that keeps getting larger and larger. This is caused by human pollution, which produces the called 'Greenhouse effect'. The main reason for this is the emission of carbon dioxide. This emission has different sources, from carbon, petrol and gas combustion to forest burning.

Another evidence is the melting of the Artic and Antartic continents, which increases sea level. This means that the sea water has less salt per litre. Because of this, a lot of marine species will disappear.

Global warming is too obvious to ignore. We must do something before it is too late. And, even now, is already too late to mend certain things, like the extinction of numerous species or the big ozone layer hole.

AMPHIBIAN DECLINE SERVES AS GLOBAL WARMING by Pablo López-Díez
A)
Besides the evidence shown in the test, I think it's obvious that our planet's climate is suffering a change.
Summers are hotter, dryer and longer and winters are colder and shorter. It's no surprise though; cars, industry and planes are the most contaminating things on Earth. Nevertheless there are some political interests in reducing contamination, such as Kyoto agreement.
Another proof of global warming is the Poles meltdown. We are all familiarized of that process.
Global warming is something we are involved in and there's nothing I can write to avoid it that hasn't been said before; although I'd like everyone else to think that the Earth is not our planet, it's the planet we live in.
